What Is Veganism?
Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, the exploitation of and cruelty to animals. That applies not only to diet but also to clothing, cosmetics, and everyday consumer choices.
Vegan vs. vegetarian – what's the difference?
While vegetarians avoid meat and fish, vegans also avoid all animal products: milk, eggs, honey, wool, leather, down, and animal-derived additives in clothing or cosmetics.
Why do people choose veganism?
- Animal welfare: avoiding animal suffering in factory farming and the textile industry
- Environment: animal agriculture is one of the biggest drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, land use, and water consumption
- Health: a balanced plant-based diet can lower the risk of certain lifestyle-related diseases
What does that have to do with clothing? Textiles often contain animal-derived materials too – from wool and silk to animal-based glues used in printing. Vegan fashion deliberately avoids these and relies on plant-based or synthetic alternatives like organic cotton.
